My primary vehicle for commuting was a 2000
Landrover Discovery that gets about 12 to 14 mpg in commuter
traffic. Heck, it barely gets 17 mph on the highway. But
its fun to drive and only requires a fill up once a week for my home
to work travels.
When gas prices hit their peak back in September
2005 due to the troubles in the middle east, I decided it was time I
did something. Prices for premium gas were over $3/gal and
looked like they weren't coming back down anytime soon.
That was the primary reason. The second
reason was that I'd vowed to get another bike after having to trash
my '78 Yamaha Triple because it was beyond repair after its last
spill. That was back in 1995.
I picked up my BMW F650 GS from
BMW Motorcycles of
North Houston (this dealer closed early 2008) back in August of 2005. I think I've taken
the truck to work less times than I have digits on my two hands in
the past year.
Observations:
Having owned the F650 GS for over a year now, I have observed the
following:
- You can easily do the maintenance yourself
- Parts take a long time to get here from Germany
- The bike is fun to ride on and off road
- You can take the F650GS very long distances comfortably
- My truck is getting dusty.
